Merry Christmas! (And a happy new year.)

Merry Christmas Eden Rowing!

Next week we are at the school Monday 30th, Tuesday 31st and Thursday 2nd, 7:30-9:00am for Christmas break training. It has been really encouraging to see the turnout over the break. We are back to our regularly scheduled times after the break.

A reminder that $25 payable to Eden High School is due ASAP for the Brock Rowing Tank! Money can be given directly to me, or left in the office. There may be some changes in the schedule due to competition conflicts, I will post these changes as soon as they are confirmed.

Coming up we will have some optional spirit wear available. We will also get the ball rolling on our Rudernkrieg Indoor Rowing Competition which in the past has created some great revenue for the program; I have a solid group of volunteers, but more the merrier!

Christmas Break Training

We will be having training sessions over the Christmas break. It is recommended to come out for at least 3 sessions, but you are more than welcome to come out for all 6 days. We will be having guest athletes here training for University and even National Team programs. It will be a great opportunity to train beside world class athletes.

We will hold training sessions at the school 7:30-9:00am Mon December 23, Tues 24, Thur 26, Mon 30, Tues 31, Thur January 2.

Over the break, try to continue to get some training in 5 days a week. There are some great video resources in the video section of the blog. We do not want to lose progress while school is out. Get out and shovel your parent's driveway!

Brock Rowing Centre Details

Hi all,

I received the invoice from Brock yesterday for the rowing centre. I have 10 sessions during the Saturday 8:00am-9:30am shift booked for the entire program starting January 11. There are only 25 athletes permitted in the facility at a time, so we will alternate weeks.

The cost is $25 per athlete. I need cheques payable to Eden High School by Thursday Dec. 19. If you could write 'Rowing' in the memo line, it would help out our secretary.

Junior Women and Senior Men (+ Colleen.) will be at "The Tank" January 11, 25, February 8, 22, March 8.

Junior Men and Senior Women will be at The Tank, January 18, February 1, 15, March 1, 15.

I am still waiting for Athlete Profile Sheets from, but not limited to: Maddy, Ethan, Colleen, Claudette, Kennedy, Lauren G. If you have not done so, please get those to me ASAP. Extra copies are in the office.

Brock Tank

Just and important reminder! We start Brock tank January 11th unless otherwise specified.

There was a bit of a mix up. When Brock tank is confirmed we will have to have payments in and there will be a letter/email home.

I hope there isn't too much confusion.

Brock Rowing Tank

I'm in the middle of booking up some sessions for the Brock Rowing Tank.

It looks like we will have the Saturday 8:00-9:30am shift booked for the beginning of the new year. I am booking 10 sessions for the entire program, and we will alternate crews each week. That means athletes will be expected to be available for a shift every other week. I have not been invoiced for this yet, so the cost is still to be determined, but it looks as though it may be cheaper than the original $40 estimated cost. I will send home information on costs and directions and schedule once this all gets finalized.

I am still waiting on some Athlete profile Sheets, once I get these in I can e-mail important information. I need these in ASAP! To run the program I want to, I need to have contact with the parents of our athletes. This weekend I will put together my mailing list, and get in touch. Please tell your friends.

Sunday 24 November 2013

And we're off!

We had a good first week! The program is larger than last year, and we are excited about the growth.

Junior Men are training in the mornings (6:15-7:45am) at the school with Mr. Scott Vanderlee on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Junior Women are training after school (3:00-4:45pm) with myself, Mr. Dan Ducroix on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Senior athletes are currently training in the mornings (6:15-7:45am) at the school with Mr. Mike 'Petro' Petrychanko and Tiffany Rusch.

New athletes with a good attitude are still welcome to come out.

I am still waiting on Athlete Profile Sheets from quite a few athletes; I would like these ASAP. Completed forms can be left in the office or handed directly to me.

As always, please feel free to e-mail me directly with any questions or concerns: d.ducroix@gmail.com

Eden Rowing Club Dinner

Hey Crew!

A bit of a short notice, but we have decided we would like to out out for dinner with the program on Thursday Night. (June 13)

Scorecard Harry's, Thursday at 7:00pm. (Some of us who are rowing for the club may be a bit late.)

Dinner is $10 for pizza, wings and pop.

See you there, and spread it around! Bring whoever you want.

Sunday 2 June 2013

End of the season.

Well, this is the end. I won't use the blog to wish my final goodbyes, but I felt there should be some type of end to this blog.

We have had many ups and downs, but much has been learned. This season was a valuable experience to make next year a good one. We hope you feel the same.

Congratulations to all that made it through the season, it was a tough go at times.

Thank you all for making this a memorable first season with Eden Rowing for our coaching staff. We all hope to be back next season better than ever. We are already getting organized to start up again November 2013. See you then.

Schoolboy cancelled.

Schoolboy has been cancelled due to weather conditions.

Eden will be awarded the bronze medal for both Colleen in the Sr. W 1x and Ethan and Sean in the Jr. M 2x.

This was an anticlimactic but seemingly fitting ending to a gong show season. I hope no one walks away from this season too discouraged, I can't imagine we will ever see a season anything like this again.

Expect to hear from your coaches sometime next week.

Another delay.

Races are postponed. A decision is being made at 2:00pm.

Check the website and twitter for official decisions.

Also, give yourselves lots of time to get down there... it's going to be busy!

See you down there!

Thursday 30 May 2013

This is it.

This is the big weekend. Like everything else this year, I am new to this, so some of the fine details we will will have work out as we go. Thanks again to all for bearing with me through this learning curve.

Tonight I am grabbing the athletes' wristbands to get in and out of the compound. This is important because they will be restricting traffic (Vehicle and pedestrian.) on the island. There will be wristbands for the parents to have access to our tent, but I will get that information tonight I hope. Many THANK YOUS! to the parents who helped organize this.

Weigh in scales are open from 7:00am-11:00am. Athletes should be a little earlier than usual to get down and ready for their race. The island will be VERY busy. Photo IDs and rowing attire are necessary for weighing in. Puppy dog eyes will not work this time, so make sure you have these things before you leave the house! There is a priority weigh in schedule that has been posted to the CSSRA's website. Talk to your coach about weigh in times.

Photo IDs are 100% necessary for weighing in AND for getting on to the water. Have them and keep them safe.

Relax and stay out of the sun this weekend. Wear sunscreen!! Sun can drain lots of energy, and we need all the energy we can get to make it through this busy 3 day event. No roughhousing, a hurt ankle could take you out of the race.

The official Friday schedule is out, and looks the same as the preliminary draw.

Event 01: Junior Men Four with Coxswain - first race: Friday 9:00am
Event 06: Senior Women 63 kg Single - first race: Friday 11:06am
Event 09: Junior Women Double - first race: Friday 11:13am
Event 27: Junior Men Double - first race: Friday 3:53pm

Athletes that are not racing: It is expected that you relax for the day, and come out and support the other crews racing. Stay out of the sun, and stay safe... and out of trouble!

I will see you all this weekend.

P.S. Keep hydrated!!

Message from Parent Support Crew

Good evening everyone,

I can’t believe that there is only 7 days to go in Eden High School’s rowing season. Where has this season gone?

My name is Craig Kozun-Young, My Daughter is Mackenzie, she rows the Junior Women’s 4+ and in the 8. Coach Ducroix asked me if I would like to head up the “Eden Rowing Support Crew 2013”.

There are only a few days to go, so we could really use your help. I have paid for a 20’ x 20’ “home base” tent area on Henley Island for Schoolboy. This area will be used for our athletes to rest and replenish. I believe that the parents, and coaches will also need a place to meet and get out of the sun and possibly rain. I will have a tarp for the floor and tables for food etc. I procured an Eden Rowing banner for last weekend’s regatta in London which will be fixed to our tents this weekend, so everyone will know who we are (by the way, our crews did a fantastic job in less than perfect conditions in London).

If you are able to help, I think we need the following items as a starting point: coolers, ice, water, sports drinks like Gatorade, nutrition bars, things for lunch like muffins, sports bars, fruit like oranges etc. We also need lawn chairs.

What I would like to do is get a gas barbecue with burgers, hotdogs, maybe some salads etc., plates condiments, cutlery and so on, again for the athletes, but also for the parents and coaches as well. There are hot foods, chips etc available on the island, but why pay for them if we can support our own crews. In speaking with Coach Ducroix, we have approx 22 athletes, 5 coaches and parents, so we may need a fair amount of basic items.

Please email me with what you can bring for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I am not sure if there is anything happening on Friday or not, but I will have the tents set up Friday morning until the last race on Sunday.

Please forward this email to any other Eden Rowing parents that you may know, and also Please help me make sure that all our athletes know there will be a home base for them!

Thanks again

Craig Kozun-Young - cyoung134@sympatico.ca

CSSRA Championship's preliminary draw.

The preliminary draw is out!

Once again I can not stress enough that photo IDs are 100% necessary to race.

Stay safe this week, we've had too long of a season for you to not be able to race this weekend.

The draw and other important information about the event can be found at: www.cssra.org (The draws are a bit hidden, but they're in the grey bar under the photo on the front page.)

Events we are entered in:

Event 01: Junior Men Four with Coxswain - first race: Friday 9:00am
Event 05: Junior Men Quad - first race: Saturday 9:03am
Event 06: Senior Women 63 kg Single - first race: Friday 11:06am
Event 09: Junior Women Double - first race: Friday 11:13am
Event 14: Junior Women 63kg Eight - first race: Saturday 11:23am
Event 27: Junior Men Double - first race: Friday 3:53pm
Event 28: Junior Women 59kg Four with Coxswain - first race: Saturday 3:28pm
Event 30: Senior Men 72 kg Single - first race: Saturday 4:24pm

*Please check schedule on the official site, I caught myself making a mistake when transferring to blog once. Times are subject to change.

The club would like everyone to watch this video as well. We should know what we're doing at this point, but it's worth a watch. This is a big event and they don't mess around.

Final Stretch

Hi Crew,

We're in the final stretch! Schoolboy is next weekend!! (Starting Friday.)

Please make sure you have your IDs ready for the weekend. If you do not have a PHOTO ID please get in to the office Monday and get a student card!! (Kendra, I have your student card in my backpack.) It will take a few days to get it made. This is 100% necessary to race.

There are no coach boats on the water this week (only safety boats.) so please take extra care out there and listen to your coxie.

Once I get the draw I will post it here as usual.

Remember that St. Catharines Rowing Club orientation is this Tuesday 28th at 5:00 at the island. We can go out for a short row after that. You should all consider this program!

Saturday 25 May 2013

Congratulations Rowers

Congratulations to our athletes who participated in today's Regatta at Fanshawe in London. We won gold in both the Jr. Men's 2x and 4x, as well as having our Jr. Women's 4+ demonstrate a strong performance in the final of their event! We are really looking forward to riding this wave into the CSSRAs this coming week!

London Directions

I've never been there, but I'm using this address to find it. Use at your own discretion. Scott and I will be there early, so feel free to contact us if needed.
https://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=embed&hl=en&geocode=&q=1424+Clarke+Road,+London,+Ontario&aq=0&sll=43.044366,-81.173687&sspn=0.045603,0.077162&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1424+Clarke+Rd,+London,+Middlesex+County,+Ontario+N5V+3B4&ll=43.047942,-81.182098&spn=0.037634,0.051498&z=13&iwloc=A

Off to London

We have an exciting weekend coming up. For those headed to London, please remember to be there 1 1/2 hours prior to the posted race start. Also know that after the final event we will need to quickly de-rig the boats and load them back on the trailers. This does not take long, especially if we are working together.

It will also go quicker if we have a few more 7/16 wrenches/socket wrenches around, so feel free to bring some, but you do not need to as I have my tools already packed!

See you tomorrow!

Welland Photos

I have been creating a DVD to distribute to the athletes who participated this past weekend in the SNRC Invitational Regatta. I however do not have video/photos from the awards, due to power failure. If you or your parents have some nice pictures that you would like added into the Video that I will burn for you, please email it to me at scott.vanderlee@gmail.com.

I will be done Friday with the video, so you need it sent in by tomorrow evening to be included.

Parent Support Crew

Hello parents,

After Welland many of you have expressed interest in running a bit of a parent committee/support crew. I think this would be a great idea for our athletes who have worked very hard during a long season. As coaches we are fairly busy with the logistics of racing and training, and struggle to organize this end.

What I need is a volunteer to be a bit of a leader and a liaison to help organize other support volunteers to make it all happen. And of course anyone else who is able to help out in other ways.

Other schools have parent committees that run fund raising, supply tents and food and drinks for the athletes and organize rides to practices and events. I think if we could get some frame work for this started now and carry it over to next season it would make some things much easier for all involved.

Of course we have Schoolboy Regatta (Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships) coming up, and it would be nice to have something set up for that.

Anyone interested, please e-mail me at d.ducroix@gmail.com with the subject line Support Crew. I will figure out who is best suited to head this program, and filter e-mails over to them.

Thanks!

St. Catharines Rowing Club registration night

St.Catharines Rowing Club Summer Registration Night
Tuesday May 28th 5pm at the Boathouse

This is a great opportunity to learn how to row better and have tons of fun while doing it. The summer season gets you out rowing in some great weather; time with the city's best coaches; lots of racing all over Southern Ontario; and you get to row with athletes from all over the region. All of you should consider this opportunity.

The best way to sign up for summer rowing is online, right now! Athletes should go to the St. Catharines Rowing Club website (http://www.stcatharinesrowingclub.org/), select HIGH SCHOOL, sign in with their login, and then choose summer competitive. Follow the process through to completion, and pay ($365, you can use several payment options).

There will also be an information tent at Schoolboy all weekend.

2013 Doug and Sam Wells WOSS Rowing Championships

Hi crew,
A couple of crews are heading to London this weekend to race. That is the jr. mens 4x and the jr. womens novice 4+. The official schedule has been released and looks like this for Eden:

Heats
10:27 AM  event 19 Junior Mens Double Heat A - EDEN lane 2
10:48 AM  event 21 Junior Women 63kg Four with C Heat B - EDEN lane 2

Finals
1:30 PM event 4 Junior Mens Quad strait Final - EDEN lane 4
4:00 PM event 19 Junior Men Double Final
4:20 PM event 21 Junior Women 63kg Four with C Final

The plan is to drive up Saturday morning and back after the races. Kate has a van  available as does Mackenzie's Dad, Craig, so we should have lots of extra spots. We will need to fill out a permission form for the rides. I will be there early for the coaches meeting. Please just e-mail me if you need anything: d.ducroix@gmail.com

Monday 20 May 2013

Tuesday Morning

In case anyone is going online to double check practice times, we are back to normal tomorrow. I know that I caught most of you anyway, but I just wanted to be safe.

You should all also note that we are really in crunch time and every thing you put into your training the next two weeks will show in your races. Please consider what you eat and do during your 'off' time. Drink lots of water, try to avoid the junk and get in lots of stretching and cardio. Increased cardio leads to increased performance. You should all consider a run in your daily plans, on top of your rowing workouts to really prepare for the CSSRA Championships.

Also, a big congratulations to everyone this past weekend. Final results can be found at the SNRC website. Many of your times were not far off of medal contention. Some of your heats were even faster than the top finishers in the finals. So if we could keep up that endurance and perform in the finals as we do in the heats we will really frighten the other clubs.

Have a great week and God Bless.
Mr. V

Friday morning practice

Quad: We will be practicing with the Jr. Quad in the morning at 5:15am only tomorrow, as the Jr. 4 is already on the trailer ready for Welland.

Remember to check the posts in regards to race times and be at the island at least 1.5 hr. beforehand to weigh in. Weigh-ins are from 6:30am-9:30am both Saturday and Sunday (you need to weigh-in both days). Our open-weight boats will not need to weigh-in, but all coxies must weigh in for each day.

Let your parents know that parking will be 5 dollars at John Deere or at the Colborne Parking Lot.

Contact your coaches if there are any problems that you cannot work out with your teammates.

SNRC HS Invitational

Hey crew, so some important stuff about the races this weekend.

The trailer leaves for Welland Friday morning (May 17). So we have to have it loaded tomorrow after evening practices. We are only taking the Pride and the Girl, so it shouldn't be too much work.

Crews will have the opportunity to practice on Friday at the South Niagara Rowing Club from 3:00 - 7:00, please talk to your coach for details.

IDs are needed for this event. (For real this time... maybe.) There will also be weigh-ins for the first time. Weigh-ins are open from 6:30am - 9:30am on both race days. Crews should once again be there at least an hour and a half before their race (If not more), but must be there for weigh-ins. Competitors must weigh in both days. Weigh-ins are done wearing school racing attire and done as an entire crew. (If you are rowing open then obviously no weigh-ins are needed except for the cox.)

Jr. Men's Practice Tomorrow and Jr. Women's cox-four

Gentlemen,
Tomorrow morning we will be without Max and Ethan, which means that everyone else is required to be there for practice to be able to take place. If, for any reason, you are unable to attend then you MUST call one of your coaches beforehand. Do not give us excuses after a practice why you were not there.

We have a very busy schedule coming up and in order to experience success we must prepare for these events. We rely on each member of the group to give their greatest efforts during practice to ensure the growth and success of the entire team. Please do not let your teammates down.

Jr. Women: Thursday morning I am told that the Bonnie and Sheila will be available for use as well...So ladies, that means you have an opportunity to come out and race against the boys once again and do some piece work with us. If you are able and willing we invite you out on Thursday morning at 5:15am. Let your coaches know and we can arrange for it.

Have a great day everyone. Go to class and chapel. Get your work done and stay out of trouble.

Post Mother's Day Events

How 'bout that weather? Amiright?

I think we can all agree that the cancellation of Mother's day was well warranted, but we were very excited to get in to the meat of the racing season.

Once again, here are the upcoming events. If you can't make it to an event, please let your coach know ASAP.

Welland (May 18-19)

You will need a ride to the South Niagara Rowing Course for the 2 day event. Please try to work out a carpool.

I have finished making the entries, but will not submit the payment until tomorrow. If you are not able to make it next week, please let me know immediately. (Lauren, I know that you can't.) The entries look like this so far:

Event 03: Jr Womens 63kg 4+
Event 05: Junior Mens 4x
Event 09: Senior Womens 63kg 1x
Event 11: Junior Womens 63kg 8+
Event 13: Senior Mens 72kg 1x
Event 14: Junior Mens 2x
Event 36: Junior Mens 4+

London (May 25)

Seems as though some of you are very excited about this. Since it involves traveling and a few more logistical issues, how practices and racing go in the coming weeks will greatly determine the likely hood of participation in this regatta. So please continue to demonstrate a good attitude and we will try to make this happen. Mackenzie's Dad, Craig has already volunteered some space in a van and a tent to set up as base for the event, so a big THANK YOU for that. If any other parents are able to help with the logistics of this all, it would be greatly appreciated. A bus is another option, but we will work this out as we get closer. I already know Jill can not make it. If this regatta is a conflict for anyone else, please let your coach know. Crew availability will obviously determine entries in this event.

CSSRA Championships (Schoolboy) (May 31-June 2)

This is the 3 day event that concludes our rowing season. Crews from all over North America will be here to compete. It is only 3 weeks away!

Thanks for the support in the program so far!

You are representing the club, our school, your coaches and also yourselves! Be polite and courteous.

Please dress appropriately; That means rowing apparel to show we are there to collect for the rowing club. If you don't have any, then borrow someone's. Please no ripped jeans or grubby looking clothes. Dress as though you are going to your grandparents for an afternoon lunch or something. It could rain so please dress according to weather. which brings me to the next point:

Tag outside of your location. Be respectful of the business, they are doing us a big favour by allowing us to tag there.

By no means should the boxes be brought home. If there are any issues please call your Director/Collector or your coach.

Safety first; if you should find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, go inside and alert the manager of your location.

Please only give out stickers to people donating. Stickers are not to be worn by athletes or used to decorate the box or other things around you. Respect the stickers and the boxes, they all cost money.

Be prepared to answer what you are collecting money for... it's for the high school rowing program. Approach people, but don't be pushy.

Show up on time for your shift. It's not fair to leave people waiting. Please don't leave until some one is there to replace you. If there is a concern please call your coach about this.

Your coach and the collectors will be around to make sure things are running smooth, and to collect money. There might even be an appearance by Mr. Thompson, so look sharp.

Thanks to all participating. Let's make this run smoothly.

Once again: Uniforms are mandatory. All thletes need to come with photo ID; School ID will work, or anything with a photo. Athletes should be at the island an hour and a half before their race; the Jr. Men 4+ could probably come for 6:30, but don't be late! Boat draws will be held on Wednesday.

Jr. Girls

We Are back to our usual time tomorrow: Be at the island for 4:30, so we can push off for 5:00. I will be at the school for 4:00 to pick up bags.

Friday 3 May 2013

Boys Tomorrow Morning

Even though I am sure we all got the memo on practice tomorrow, I wanted to still put it in text format. The boys' quad will practice at 6am (be there no later than 5:45am to set up). Colleen, you are still welcome to join at the same time.

Cox-Four Boys: As you are not at the island this weekend, you should be keeping up with your cardio/core training. Do not just laze around and fall out of shape this weekend. We have a busy month ahead of us and need to capitalize on all of our opportunities to help 'the team' improve.

Consider your diets as well during this month. Eat healthy and hearty meals so that you all have the energy and strength to do and be your best on the water and land.

See you on the water...
Mr. Vanderlee

post Early Bird

Hi everyone,

Things went well today.

We are back to practice tomorrow with some new insight to how things are looking. We're all very excited to move in to racing season.

Just a reminder on some key dates. (Keep in touch with your coach and blog for updates.)
*We may, or may not do the Welland or London regattas, depending on interest from coaches, athletes and parents; but it would be nice to get out of St. Catharines for at least one regatta.

Practice confusion and social media

Hey All,

There was a bit of a mix up on practice today. This is frustrating for athletes, coaches and parents. Please tell your friends to check the blog for official information. I have made a social media sharing button on the blog, so you can post blog information on Facebook or Twitter, it can be found on the right side. (You can share the entire blog from the home page, or click the title of a post and share from just that post.)

I will see you all tomorrow. Rest up, and good luck!

PS I have made a Facebook banner so you can tell all your friends you're a hardcore athlete, and racing season is on.

Tomorrow's Junior Boys' Practice

Tomorrow, due to working schedule confusions, the only boat that will be going out is the quad at 10am with Mr. D. The Four will not be going out tomorrow, as we do not have a full crew, or an available extra coach to run the practice. Sunday, both boys crews are expected at the island for 8am in preparation for the race, which is now at 9:20 for junior boys quad and cox-four. See you all Sunday. Get good rest and stretch often. Mr. V

Early Bird

Early Bird is this Sunday April 28th. It is a no pressure regatta that is an opportunity for athletes and coaches to get a feel for what the racing season is looking like.

Please be at the island at least 1.5 hours before your scheduled race. Your crew must be wearing matching attire. (Exceptions with weather are permitted.) I would suggest Eden sweatshirts if it's too cold for unisuits. (It probably will be.) The grand stands will be closed.

There was a bit of an issue with formatting, but here are the heats Eden will be racing in.

Early Bird Coming Up!

We have the Early Bird Regatta happening this coming Sunday, which means that we really all need to ensure that we make the most out of our practice opportunities this week, as the weather has beat us down as of late. Please ensure that if you are unable to make a practice that you give ample notice so that we can find a replacement. However, with your crews relying on you to perform at your best, please do not let them down by either taking it easy at practice or taking a day off. Remember, as this is a team sport we show commitment and respect to one another by arriving ON TIME and having our coach boats and oars ready to go BEFORE the start of practice. Junior boys: We need to have you there by 5:15am each morning. By 5:20am the oars should be hanging in the oar trees and the coach boats should be close to finished, if not already in the water. By 5:30am sharp we should be shoving off the dock to ensure that we get full use of our practice slot. Keep each other accountable and speak to your coaches if there are any concerns. Have a great week everyone. Remember to throw in extra core work on top of your practices to really help benefit your crew. P.S. show up to your classes on time, attend chapel and do your homework. Mr. V

Junior Boys Rowing Practice

Good afternoon everyone,
Today we had a little more rain and wind than we would have liked. Thank you to those who showed up to practice. A quick reminder is that unless you are told otherwise, you are to arrive to regularly scheduled practices. Do not go by your gut feelings, or rumours. Simply look at the blog or talk to your coach. We did have other plans for the morning, but told the three who showed up today to just go home, as the others made that decision for themselves.

Tomorrow morning we are still taking out the Quad (and Colleen if you would like) at 6am. That means that we want to be pushing off the dock at 6am, not just arriving. Plan to be off the water by 7am, as I have other commitments tomorrow, thus making it essential that we don't lose any time waiting for latecomers.

Have a great afternoon and evening. See you in the morning.

Mr. Vanderlee

Update April 10th

Hi crew. Just a couple of reminders

1)  The whether has been less than ideal. I don't know what's going on with the Boys (+ Colleen.) program, but I have cancelled practice for the Jr. Girls (+ Brad.) for the next couple of days. Be prepared to resume practice Friday. We will discuss Saturday then. Jr. Boys, keep in communication with your coaches.

2)  Get Registered! (Details Below.)

3)  Today I received the chapel attendance for the rowing program. Some of you are at risk of being pulled from rowing. It is part of the school rules that you must attend chapel regularly to participate in extra curricular activities. I would hate to pull some one from the crew because of this, so go to chapel!

4)  I hope that everyone has racing gear available for racing season. (Please let us know if there are any issues.) I got the invoices today, but I haven't looked at them yet.

5)  We need to stay on top of our life jacket chores. We're a new program and I would like to fly under the radar as much as possible.

If i think of anything else I will post it to the blog.

Things are running pretty good so far, so let's keep it up. I know that the beginning of the season can be very discouraging, but I encourage you to persevere.

Register!

Hi everybody, just a reminder that we need to register BOTH for the St. Catharines Rowing Club and Rowing Canada. If you have not done this, please do that now, it's quick! Tell your friends.

Rowing Canada:

St. Catharines Rowing Club:

Jr. Girls + Brad
Missy will not be there for the next couple of days. We will go about our usual routine. She is planning to be there Thursday. We may switch up practice a bit for Wednesday since I have the weekly club meeting to attend to. We'll talk about it tomorrow

Wednesday 3 April 2013

Jr. Boys --> Register!

The following Junior Boys have not registered yet on the St. Catharines rowing website:
Max
Keaton
Mike

Get this done ASAP. We will check again in the morning.

Practice will be at 6:30am at Eden, as the course is closed tomorrow morning due to the ice that has formed over the last couple days. We will be back on the water on Friday at 5:15am.

Mr. V

Rowing course closure.

Hi Crew,

The course has been closed again for tonight (April 3rd) and tomorrow morning. (April 4th)

The course is scheduled to be open for tomorrow after school. (April 4th)

Jr. Girls, we will be practicing after school today.

Jr. Boys, you will have practice tomorrow morning at the school. (I didn't catch the time from Mr. Vanderlee,  but just show up the same time you did today.)

Just another quick reminder that rowing gear orders are due on Friday. (Details were previously posted, so look below.) And that all athletes must be registered with the club, even if you registered last year. (http://www.stcatharinesrowingclub.org/ - Look for the moving arrow at the top left.)

Tuesday 2 April 2013

Course closed for today and tomorrow morning!

Hi all,

The course has been closed for tonight and tomorrow morning. I didn't see all of you after school, so please pass this on to everyone!

Tomorrow the morning shift already has plans in place to practice at the school.

Jr. girls, and Brad: Please come prepared to practice at the school tomorrow just in case this weather keeps up. I will be at the school tomorrow and fill you in on the situation as I find out.

If we are on the water we will start running to the course tomorrow because I am concerned that our physical conditioning is falling to the wayside. Missy will be there tomorrow and we will start splitting up in to smaller crews which will help our technique and physical conditioning.

Get your rowing clothing orders in! The orders need to be in for Friday!! (details below.) Racing attire is mandatory. (Unisuit is preferred, but unitop is acceptable.) Everything else is optional. (unless your crew decides to go with hats, and then your crew must match for racing.)

Please get out for a run or an erg today. We have a race at the end of the month!

Rowing Gear!

Hi Crew,

I just got the e-mail that our rowing gear order is ready to be made! Everyone must have either a unisuit (preferred.) or unitop for racing. If you have one from last year there is no need to get a new one.

Orders must be in by this Friday!!

There's some other optional gear that I made available to you. Boys: If you want some sweat pants without 'Eden' on the rear, let me know and we can make that happen. If you would like to wear hats as a crew while racing, the entire crew must have hats. Also I mentioned that we might like a long sleeve option. I will ask about it after school, and if there is a demand for it I will get that option up. Of course parents and supporters can also make orders.

Orders can be placed at:
http://www.regattasport.com/iteams/login

Select 'Eden Rowing'

Password: EDEN13

Please come to me with any questions.

Monday April 1 - Jr. Girls

Hey guys, I hope you're all having a good Easter.

Tomorrow is supposed to be less nice than the rest of the weekend was. So let's not bother with all of the boat washing and rigging and what not. Come prepared to work out. (running shoes.) Also come prepared for the weather. (It's supposed to be 1 degree and feel like -6!) We might still go a bit long, but I would like to be off the water by 12:30. Show up at 9:30ish to get stuff ready.

See you then!

Oh and make sure you register!
http://membership.stcatharinesrowingclub.org/

Sunday 24 March 2013

Water Season: we're in it.

Hey Everybody, we're now fully in water season. A few things to go over.

We need to dress for the weather! It is cold outside, and even colder while we're sitting on the water. You can always remove layers. Bring a couple pairs of socks and a toque. Keep in mind that shift 1 starts at 5:30 am, AKA the coldest time of the day. Also you will be colder sitting on the water than you are when you check out front of your house to see how to dress, so over compensate. You could be sitting in the coach boat.

Come prepared to work out on land everyday. Running shoes and a water bottle is a must. If the water is too rough or there are other issues, we will still be working out.

RESPECT is a requirement for water training. That means respect for the rowing club and its rules, our equipment, our coaching staff, and most importantly, safety. Disrespect will not be tolerated.

We need you to show up on time; for us to make best use of out time we need to get the coach boat and personal gear ready before we get on the water.

Schedule:

Shift 1
Jr. Boys and Colleen
Show up to the island for 5:00am. Shift is done for 7:00am, you can either organize rides back to the school, or be prepared to run back to school. (It's not that far!)

Shift 2
Jr. Girls and Brad
Show up to the island for 4:30pm. You can either organize rides or run down to the island. If you want me to drive your bags to the island we can organize that. Shift is over at 6:30pm.

As always, we are working out the kinks as we go.

Monday 18 March 2013

Swim Test Wednesday!

Swim test is booked for this Wed, March 20 at the YMCA from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. We can walk over after school. (Sorry, we couldn't get you out of school!)

$3.00 per athlete. You will need your bathing suit and a towel, plus a pair of track pants and a sweat shirt that can go in the pool. (Keep in mind chlorine can damage clothing, so keep your fancy track pants at home.)

Report to the access desk for directions and lane usage.

If you cannot make it, please talk to either Mr. Vanderlee or Mr. Ducroix about alternatives, but this is a mandatory requirement for water training.

Thursday 14 March 2013

IMPORTANT Water Season Update!

I hope everyone has been working out! :)

It looks as though we will be getting on the water the week starting March 24.  This means we have a few things that need to get taken care of ASAP.

1) Rowing fees must be in by the 20th at the latest. Cheques made payable to Eden High School. - $350

2) I got an e-mail from the club captain, Mark Welsh, that we are to be at the rowing club on Monday March 18th to go over club procedures and a bit of orientation. Since your're all on March break I know this is bad timing to get the word out, but it is what it is. Please spread this to however you can using any means possible. (Phone, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, smoke signals, etc.) We should aim to be there for 3:30PM. To be honest I'm not sure how long it will take, but the club is open until 6:00 and we will stick around to make sure everybody gets home safe. We will not be on the water, but dress appropriately for the weather.

3) We need to get the swim test done before we can get on the water. I was planning on working things out with Holy Cross, but they are planning on doing it Sunday 24 at the Brock pool. I realize this is a conflict for most of you, so I am pushing to either do it on the Saturday with them, or book a date for late next week. Please be aware that this MUST be done and the date is coming up.

4) We need to watch that safety video. I'll see how long it is, but I think we can get it done over a lunch. Let's aim for Tuesday.

We're all excited about getting on the water, so let's make this housekeeping as smooth as possible.

Hope you're all having a good break, and feel free to e-mail the coaches at edenrowing@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Mr. Ducroix

Rowing Fees

Eden Rowing On-Water Registrations Due

March 5, 2013
Dear Athletes & Parents:

Eden Rowing on-water training is fast approaching. Coaches, as well as the athletes have been anticipating this change-over from land training for quite some time now. With this in mind, we need to collect fees from each of our members soon in order to allow for as smooth a transition as possible, ensuring that all members are available and permitted to participate as early as possible.

The projected start date for on-water training is Saturday, March 23rd. The week starting March 18th the SCRC (St. Catharines Rowing Club) will begin having schools come to the boathouse to clean, rig, prep and instruct novices on things like coach boat assembly and boat carrying.

Registration: We will have athletes register their personal information to the St. Catharines Rowing Club during practice. However, if they miss practice, or have not registered yet, they must do so through the following link: http://membership.stcatharinesrowingclub.org/
Click on the Register Online link at top of the page and continue with the prompts. Do not pay the fee online. Follow fee payment directions below.

Fees Due: $350 per athlete, cheques can be made payable to Eden High School
Due Date: We would like to have the fees collected as soon as possible. Please have all fees paid no later than March 20th.

On-water attire: Please dress warmly for the colder weather. We prefer that rowers come dressed in layers that can be shed as they warm up during practice. Other items to consider:
-        Toque/warm headwear
-        Gloves with grip
-        Warm socks

As always, never hesitate to contact the coaches with any concerns. Our team blog address is edenrowing.blogspot.ca and our email is edenrowing@gmail.com. Once athletes know who the coach of their boat will be they may be given phone contact information as well.

Lets make this a season to remember!

Sincerely,
S. Vanderlee
